Project AI is useful when it drafts a plan from a brief, flags overload, and summarizes status. It is not useful when the board is empty. Pick the shape your team already understands: boards (Trello, Asana), docs-plus-tasks (Notion, ClickUp-class), sheets (Smartsheet), or Gantt (Microsoft Project, TeamGantt, Instagantt). Then turn on the AI inside that tool. A second PM platform will not fix a missing owner.

Everyday team tools
Asana is lists, timelines, and AI that drafts tasks and rules. Best default for marketing and ops teams.
Trello is the visual board. Power-Ups add dates and automation. AI suggestions help only after cards have real names.
Basecamp is message boards, to-dos, and files. Light on predictive AI. Best when you want less software.
Notion is the wiki that grew a project layer. AI summarizes and fills tables. Weak as the only tool for a 40-person construction schedule.
Hive, Nifty, ProofHub, Taskworld, and Redbooth pack chat, tasks, and some AI prioritization. One of them is enough.
Work management and professional services
Wrike, Smartsheet, Teamwork, Zoho Projects, Celoxis, Sciforma, and Clarizen (Planview) add portfolios, workloads, and reports. AI here is forecast and assignment help. Garbage time entries make garbage forecasts.
Kantata (formerly Mavenlink) ties projects to money. That is the point. Do not buy it for a family chore chart.
Workzone, ScalePath, OrangeScrum, and similar mid-market tools compete on simplicity plus Gantt. Trial the report you will send to a client.
Scheduling specialists
Microsoft Project is still the heavy scheduler. AI assists; you still own the baseline.
TeamGantt and Instagantt are friendlier Gantt layers (Instagantt often sits on Asana). LiquidPlanner uses ranged estimates instead of fake-precise dates.
Teamdeck is resource calendars. Targetprocess is visual agile at scale.
Names that wander in directories (for example a “RedCircle” that is not a PM suite) should be checked on the live product page before you budget.
